FAQ's Visitor Information
At Summer Stand Up Paddle BoardIng & Kayak we want you to experience the very best day out. We do things a little different than most water sports schools in that we want to help plan your day out so that you don’t miss the very best time to be on the water. We supply all the equipment you need so all you need to do is give us a call, book a spot an arrive with a happy face. We do all the rest.
Stand-up paddleboarding, also known for the acronym SUP, is one of the fastest-growing boardsports in the world. Stand-up paddleboarding is not only an excellent workout and pastime, but it can also be a smart means of transportation. It also allows you to carry small children on the board with you. Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) offers a fun way to play on the water, with the added benefit of a full-body workout. Since you stand at full height on your board, it gives you a unique vantage point for viewing what’s down under the water and out on the horizon.
At Summer SUP & Kayak, we ask our customers to first do a lesson. In this lesson we go through all the techniques you require to get standing and paddling effectively. Along with this we go through how to get on and off your board safetly, get back on your board if you fall in the water, self rescue, rescue a friend, how to deal with the wind if it increases. We teach basic information on tide and also wind so when you come back to us we can rent to you and know you will be safe. You get so much from the lesson you will be paddling like a pro!
All safety equipment is included free of charge, that means you will get a buoyancy aid and we also provide wetsuits. However on sunny days in the summer, we recommend shorts and T shirt instead of a wetsuit. If you get into the sport and would like to get your own equipment, let us know and we’re happy to give you advice on wetsuits and boards.
This is particularly important for your first session, as the check-in process can take some time. After check-in you will be given any equipment you need before getting changed. Our sessions always start on exactly the time stated as we dont want other customers to loose out on their booked time. We also have other customers arriving after your session. If that is the case and you are late for your time slot, this counts as a no-show and you will be charged the full amount for your session. In order to avoid disappointment make sure to come to Summer SUP & Kayak with plenty of time.
No problem, sometimes plans change. You can cancel or change your session at any time up to 48 hours before the start of your slot free of charge. Cancellations after that will be charged at 80%, 20% of the price you originally paid will be retained on your account as credit that can be used against future bookings. We do not offer cash refunds for cancellations. If you do not cancel but do not show for your booking or are late for your slot, you will be charged the full amount.
At Summer SUP & Kayak all sessions are fully paid at the time of booking whether you book through our online booking system, over the phone or in person at the beach. We don’t offer a system of reservations or deposit payments, only fully paid bookings are guaranteed a slot, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot change your mind. Up to 48 hours before the start of your time slot you can cancel or change your session free of charge. If you decide against pre-booking, you can come to us and see whether a slot is available at the time of your arrival, but we cannot guarantee you that you will be able to get a slot.
Yes, stand up paddleboarding is safe, you will be wearing a bouyancy aid at all times, you will first start with an instructor who will teach you in a very safe enviroment. You will be wearing a leash so you can’t become separated from your board. Where we are based, we can be very close to shore in shallow calm waters.
Generally kids from 10 years of age onwards are able to paddle their own board in a session. Younger children can be accommodated by perhaps sharing a board or we tailor the session to suit to them. Under 10s, we recommend morning sessions only and with a parent on the water with them. Please get in touch to enquire further about taking younger children paddle boarding. There is no max age really so long as you can put on a wetsuit and would be able to spend the session knee paddling if you had difficulty standing
Yes absolutely. We think Paddle boarding is a perfect way for the whole family to get out and enjoy the water. We keep our groups small and can tailor our sessions to suit families and those of all ages. The great thing about SUP is that you will be all together, yet it still allows you all to be individual. Just paddle away if the kids are bugging you!
The good news is we ask you to contact us first to help plan your session and we choose the best possible day for you so we don’t have to cancel, however sometimes the weather changes dramically so all lessons take place subject to suitable weather conditions. If we decide that conditions for the day are looking not suitable, we would contact you at the earliest notice possible. If we have to cancel a session we would aim to reschedule it.
Yes. We give you a small dry bag so you have it near you at all times – You must declare any relevant medical or fitness concerns that may impact your participation.
No Minimum – we love taking people on the water!
Yes! Kayaking is a great way to build water confidence and with modern “sit-on-top” kayaks it is more accessible and safe than ever, bouyancy aids are worn and fitted correctly. However if you would like to take up kayaking as a sport, either sea kayaking or white water kayaking, we would strongly recommend that you learn to swim.
Absolutely! It doesn’t take much for a beginner to be able to hop into a sit on top and go, which is fantastic! But to make life easy, we spend a little time with you and ensure you know the basics and give you a designated area so we can watch from afar and pop out to you if you need any assistance.
We have double kayaks for 2 people, and single kayaks. Our double kayaks can also take a small child in the middle very easily.
We love all kinds of groups – Stags/hen parties, school tours, families, corperate team bonding, bunch of friends, teams, clubs – if you’re a group we want you!
We will sort you out even if it’s a spur of the moment decision! To make life easy, shorts and t shirt and a towel – but no stress if you don’t have them with you.
